Police are investigating after a 12-year-old girl was approached by a man in a van.

The youngster was walking home from school when a vehicle pulled up beside her in Tenterden Way, Canterbury, yesterday.

The occupant of the van is said to have stared at the girl after winding down the window.

Her mum. addressing the man on Facebook, wrote: "My daughter is 12. She is a child.

"You thought it was a good idea, as she was walking home from school to stop in the middle of the road, wind your window down and say alright darling and smile at her.

"Then you decided to pull over and stare at her making her feel very uncomfortable.

You then decided to wait for her but she had the good sense to call me and I drove to collect her.

"You were still there waiting but when I drove up to talk to you, you very quickly drove off!

"You need to have a think about your behaviour towards a young girl making her feel scared."

Police were alerted to the incident, which happened at about 4pm on the Hales Place estate, and are now carrying out inquiries in the area.

A force spokesman said: "It was reported that a man driving a van had made inappropriate comments to a girl.

"Inquiries into the incident are ongoing."
