Motorists struggle in the ice around Canterbury

Motorists struggled to get around the district on Wednesday morning as ice created treacherous driving conditions.

Tailbacks were seen on several major routes, grinding many morning travellers to a halt.

The A2 London-bound was closed due to ice and a four-vehicle accident at the A2050.

Police closed the road just before Canterbury.

There was congestion four miles east of Canterbury after a bus was involved in an accident on Bonny Bush Hill in Bishopsbourne.

Traffic queued in both directions between Rose Lane and The Street.

An accident south bound on new Ruttington Lane at Union Place caused jams.

Icy roads were blamed for a car crashing into a wall.

Drivers heading in both directions on St Augustine’s Road were caught in traffic because of an accident between the A2050 New Dover Road and Pilgrims Way.

People heading into the city from Broadstairs were also delayed following the closure of the A28 in both directions. There were four accidents between A253 (Sarre) and Grove Ferry Hill (Upstreet).

Police issued a warning and asked drivers to slow down and take extra care as they made their way to work.

Trains were also hit with services suspended on Southeastern between Faversham and Dover Priory after a train broke down at Minster.

Passengers were told to expect cancellations and delays.
