Levi Bellfield reportedly signs new confession detailing murders of Lin and Megan Russell in Chillenden

Serial killer Levi Bellfield has reportedly signed a new written confession detailing information about the brutal murders of Lin and Megan Russell that only the killer would know.

The mother and daughter were savagely attacked with a hammer off Cherry Garden Lane in Chillenden in 1996.

A second daughter, Josie, was left for dead and the family's pet dog was also killed.

The man currently serving life for those crimes has spoken out in an interview with The Mirror, hoping the new confession will clear his name.

Michael Stone, from Gillingham, was convicted after the trials in 1998 and 2001, but has always denied involvement in the murders.

The 62-year-old said: “I’ve been in prison for 26 years for a crime I did not commit.

“I know that he [Bellfield] did those murders.

“He’s just revealed some information recently that’s come to me through lawyers. It’s information that he would only know if he had done it.

“His crimes have hurt a lot of people, not just the people he murdered and their families.

“Other people have been blamed [for Bellfield’s crimes].”

It is not the first time Bellfield has apparently confessed to the murders.

The 54-year-old submitted a statement to Stone’s lawyers last February, claiming he was responsible for the deaths.

It described how he had worn "bright yellow Marigold gloves" during the attack, had pulled out on to the road in front of another driver and had thrown the hammer in the Thames before flying to Turkey.

‘His crimes have hurt a lot of people, not just the people he murdered and their families.’

He also admitted to the unsolved 1990 murder of mum-of-three Judith Gold, 51, in Hampstead, and is said to have bragged about killing at least seven women, with 19-year-old student Elizabeth Chau, who vanished in West London in 1999.

However, a source in an earlier story by The Mirror says Bellfield had allegedly withdrawn this and subsequently denied the killings.

It was reported to have been "a sick joke" to mess with Stone, who has always maintained his innocence.

According to Bellfield’s solicitor, Theresa Clark, the new confession is a “more detailed one” and that Bellfield “accepts responsibility”.

“The statement made last year was never signed by him but he’s subsequently done a written statement which he’s signed,” she added.

“That’s been forwarded to the CCRC [Criminal Cases Review Commission] for their consideration in relation to the Stone appeal. It hasn’t been sent to Kent Police because they say they have no interest in it.

“The police are going to see [Bellfield] in relation to a statement he made about Elizabeth Chau, and some other offences where nobody has died. They are all historic.”

Bellfield is already serving life for the murders of Millie Dowler, 13, Amelie Delagrange, 22, and 19-year-old Marsha McDonnell.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, 18.

The new written confession is said to be with the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which has been investigating since 2017.
