Mistakes and injuries proved costly for Canterbury in their 27-18 National League 2 South defeat against Richmond at The Athletic Ground on Saturday.

They lost the game in the last five minutes, losing a bonus point in the process, and won’t enjoy looking at the match video, seeing the number of unforced errors they made in the match.

Canterbury lost Georgis Bertolis who limped off with a knee problem, and skipper Chris Hinkins with a recurrence of shoulder problems, while replacements Matt Sheen and Tom McArthur also joined the list of walking wounded.

The other factor was the marksmanship of Richmond’s Matt Hart on target with five out of six attempts on goal, and kicked the last minute penalty which denied the visitors a point, while Canterbury's Phil Gibson managed only one successful kick out of five and saw a simple conversion attempt charged down.

Pat Sykes, Ben Thomas (pictured) and Peter Kelly scored Canterbury’s tries, while Richmond winger Johnny Webbe’s late score, plus a conversion and penalty from Hart, saw the London club home.
