People power is hoped to slow down traffic along a busy Faversham route.

Angela Martin has rallied 415 residents who live along the A2 to sign a petition which, on Friday was handed to Mid Kent MP Hugh Robertson.

It will then be formally presented to Parliament, where it will hopefully be taken up by the Department for Transport.

Retired Mrs Martin has lived in Canterbury Road in Preston with her husband Alf for nine years.

She believes that despite speed limits being reduced from 40mph to 30mph the dangerous nature of the road could lead to somone being killed.

The petition is calling for more signs, road speed indicators and even speed cameras to be installed along the road to reduce drivers speed and make them more aware of the limits.

The 63-year-old mother of three also has nine grandchildren.

She said: I’m usually quite a quiet person and my family were suprised when I started this campaign.

"But I felt so strongly something had to be done.

“The support from those in the area who have to deal with the speeding motorist has been brilliant and heart warming.

“Many of them have thanked me for starting the campaign and I’ve only come across two people who haven’t wanted to sign the petition.

“The situation is so serious and makes me so angry that drivers just ignore the limits.

“We really need to make them more aware of the danger they are putting not just themselves at but everyone else.

“There have been so many accidents along this stretch and we like five others in Preston village have had their cars written off by people going too fast.

“I’m so pleased Hugh Robertson has shown support to the campaign, and I’m confident that something will now be done.

“I haven’t been able to think about what will happen if this petition doesn’t work. I really don’t know what other directions we could take.”

Mr Robertson added: “It is an interesting case as most of the time people have an issue trying to get the correct speed limits imposed.

“They have the right limit is just isn’t being enforced.

“Even when the residents handed me the petition it was quite clear to see that cars and lorries passing-by have no consideration for the limits and just speed considerably above 30mph with no regard whatsoever.

“Although it will take a few weeks I am confident we can get something done.

“I would be disappointed if changes weren’t made by the end of summer.”
