TWO shelf stackers have admitted stealing from the Kent supermarket where they worked.

But two solicitors told Canterbury Magistrates' Court that it was common for night staff to take food and drink from the Tesco Metro store in Whitefriars in the city.

The offenders were seen by CCTV operators acting suspiciously at the back of the store and loading bottles of spirits into a car.

Phil Rowley, for one of the shelf stackers, said: "He involved himself in a culture of petty pilfering, which is well above these two within the store."

No one from Tesco responded to the Kent Messenger Group's request for a comment.
