Councillors will decide tonight whether a giant screen the size of a double decker bus can be put up in the city centre to show the London Olympics in 2012.

The offer of the screen - one of only four in the country - has come from the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.

But the contract would mean the 24ft by 12ft television would have to be installed for 10 years and cost local taxpayers £20,000 a year.

If councillors agree, it could be in place by April, this year, and will show a variety of cultural, news and sporting events, 16 hours a day, every day, with programming dictated by the BBC.
