A Whitstable couple have been charged with burglary following a daylight raid on a Canterbury home, in which thousands of pounds worth of jewellery was stolen.

Valuables including a ring, charm bracelet, iPad, Nexus tablet and cash were swiped when thieves targeted the house in Rough Common Road on Wednesday.

A family remember returned home at 4.30pm to find a window had been forced, bedrooms ransacked and jewellery boxes emptied.

Police were called, and the following day, David Slater, 34, and his partner Adele Hawkins were arrested in Ivy House Road, Whitstable.

They have since been charged with burglary. Slater was brought before magistrates in Canterbury on Friday, when he was remanded in custody.

Hawkins, 26, was released on bail until Wednesday, December 13, when she will appear at the same court.

Police spokesman Jane Walker said: "The arrests come as Kent Police continues its campaign to reduce burglary in the county."
