Man dies after car hits tree and catches light in Faversham

A road where a man lost his life last night in a freak accident has been dubbed an accident blackspot.

The 52-year-old man died after a car burst into flames after hitting a tree late last night.

Police were called just before 11pm to Ashford Road in Faversham, after a silver Vauxhall Meriva crashed into the tree.

The road was closed until 3.30am today.

The man from Ashford was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.

Robin Henley, who lives close to the crash site on Ashford Road, said this was the third serious accident on the stretch in a matter of weeks and the speed limit needs to be reduced.

The 62-year-old furniture restorer said: “The current 50mph limit is too fast and a lot of people exceed that, particularly at night.

"The speed limit needs to be 30mph and monitored by speed cameras but the Department for Transport won’t listen.

"I have nearly been decapitated by a lorry’s wing mirror when it sped past while I was cutting my hedge.

"One day an artic will go into a school bus and it will be awful. Maybe then they might do something about it.”

Mr Henley said he woke up at 3am today and saw traffic queueing outside his house but did not see the crash.

Several years ago residents campaigned for a speed limit reduction along that stretch of road but Mr Henley said he did not know whether anyone was still campaigning.
