Canterbury roads closed over concerns for man sat on railway bridge

A man sitting on a bridge above a railway line cause travel chaos on Tuesday morning.

Police raced to New Dover Road following a call from a concerned member of the public at 10.20am. A section of the road was closed around 10.30am and power to the railway line was turned off.

Traffic was diverted away from the road where it meets St George’s Place at the traffic lights on the way out of the city and at Stanmore Court for traffic coming into the city. St Augustine’s Road was also shut at the junction with Spring Lane.

Drivers were urged to use alternative routes in and out of Canterbury to avoid the building congestion in the area. The man was taken into the care of a mental health team and the road reopened again at 11.15am.
