Beautiful butterflies invade Whitstable garden

To see a butterfly flitting from flower to flower in your garden is a joy and a sign that summer is here.

But John Kemp had to grab his camera and take some pictures when he saw more than a dozen in his in South Street, Whitstable.

An influx of the painted lady butterfly has been recorded all across the south east and John, a keen photographer and astronomer says they are creating a colourful spectacle.

He added: "I saw 13 in my garden at one time, sipping nectar fron our wall flowers and I have also spotted them in Chestfield.

"They have also been reported in large numbers in Grove Ferry and Sandwich Bay.

"It is not a native butterfly to the UK but comes from Southern Europe and North Africa.

"But it is an extremely adventurous migrant and a strong flier and the only butterfly found in Iceland."

Experts believe the butterfly has flown north in search of cooler temperatures, aided by some favourable winds.
