A dog was left seriously injured on a dual carriageway after being hit by a vehicle which failed to stop.

The lurcher/saluki type suffered multiple fractures and was in 'great distress' say traffic officers who were called to the scene on the A2 at Barham.

The injured animal was reported at 10.15am on Friday and police said it also appeared to be malnourished.

PC Alex Stuart used a piece of his cheese sandwich to tempt it into his car after which it was taken to a veterinary surgery for treatment.

He said: "Failing to report a collision involving a dog is an offence under the Road Traffic Act and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

"The dog appeared to have been lying in the central reservation for some time prior to us receiving the report of the incident and its owners have not yet to come forward."

The dog is being treated for a multiple broken hip and is expected to make a full recovery.
