Bexley council said an investigation had been launched and the Environment Agency has also been informed.

Thames Water confirmed to KentOnline its team had attended yesterday and found a blocked sewer which had caused the leak.

The blockage was cleared and discharge stopped around 5pm, the water company said.

Its team remains on-site today and are working on sections of a sewer line cleaning but say other parts will need traffic management.

They will continue to monitor and take daily readings but say the watercourse is already showing improvements over yesterday.

A Thames Water spokesperson added: “Our aim will always be to try and do the right thing for our rivers, lakes and for the communities who love and value them.

"We regard all discharges of untreated sewage as unacceptable and will work with the government, Ofwat and the Environment Agency to accelerate work to stop them being necessary and are determined to be transparent."
