About two hectares of grass at the site in Sandy Lane, Orpington, in surrounding fields are also on fire.

London Fire Brigade is at the scene.

Station Commander Stephen Irvine said: "A grass fire near the childcare centre spread, causing classrooms close by to catch alight.

"The fire is producing heavy smoke and we're urging people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed until it subsides.

"There are road closures in place causing heavy traffic, so please also avoid the area if possible, whilst we make the scene safe."
