Coronavirus Kent: Isthmian League side Ashford United appeal for donations to help them through the current crisis

By Joe Harbert

Ashford United have become the latest Kent side to appeal for help in a bid to survive the coronavirus pandemic.

The Homelands outfit have set up a crowdfunding page as a way of generating some much-needed income, and are now relying on the town's locals to help get them through the current crisis.

United, who will join the likes of Folkestone and Ramsgate as one of a number of grassroots clubs requesting donations, have been hit hard by the FA's decision to expunge all football below National League level this season.

The Nuts & Bolts were sitting second in Isthmian South East before their season was officially declared void last Thursday, and on the verge of guaranteeing themselves at least a play-off spot heading into the season's final furlong with 11 wins from their previous 15 matches.

However, United are now focusing on securing their future on and off the field, and with the loss of matchday income for at least another four months, are asking for support to keep the outfit running long-term.

Manager Tommy Warrilow - who admitted promotion was the last thing on his mind after the season was scrapped - believes securing the team's future will not only benefit the club, but the residents of Ashford also.

The 55-year-old said: "The club is a fantastic hub for the community, and what we're trying to set up is a way forward for it and all the kids of Ashford with the new academy as well.

"But our last home game was at the end of February, so there's been no revenue since then, and we've also lost all our summer events like weddings and marquee functions which help go towards the football club.

"The BetVictor sponsorship has also ended for the leagues next year, so it's a tough time for all non-league teams at the moment.

"But we're all in it together, and as a club we're building something special here for everyone living in Ashford, which is why we're asking for any sort of support from people until this virus slows down.

"Everyone needs a bit of help right now, so if people could reach out in any way it will make a massive difference to us and the 120,000 people or so living here."
