The new "engineering hub" building will allow about 250 extra students to study with the college, which is run by the EKC Group.

Phase one of the Elwick Road campus was finished in 2017, moving from the Jemmett Road campus which was turned into housing.

This latest phase will see the new hub take shape on land immediately adjacent to the campus, resulting in an attached building.

Diggers have been seen mobilising on the land, with building supplies and temporary toilets and offices set up on site.

Having been on the cards for some time, the second phase of the development was given a major boost after getting an injection of cash via the Department for Education.

The new hub will aim to promote access to the fields of Information Technology, Engineering and Business for females and underrepresented groups, and is set to focus on how engineering can create solutions to climate change and decarbonisation.

Speaking at the time of the grant success, EKC Group CEO Graham Razey said: “There’s a real and pressing need for additional high quality technical and vocational education places within the community served by our Ashford College.

"Our College Group has a mission to play a leading part in enhancing the social and economic prosperity within the communities we serve, and this fund will enable us to do this for even more people."
