U-turn over road name

Church Lane it is ... but not for long
Church Lane it is ... but not for long

Originally it was Church Road, then it became Church Lane and now .... it's going to be Church Road again!

The saga of what the single-track street in the village of Kenardington should be called has finally been decided.

Ashford Borough Council’s executive committee last night (Thursday) decided to return the name of Church Lane in Kenardington to Church Road.

Concerns raised by some villagers over the name of the road led to the council carrying out a consultation with residents of Church Lane/Road and the parish council to establish their views.

The majority of Kenardington residents said they wanted the road name to return to Church Road, insisting it should not have been changed.

The executive committee agreed, with several members voicing their support for the name to be changed back to Church Road.

Cllr John Kemp, portfolio holder for planning and development, said: “There was a strong feeling locally that the people of Church Road and Kenardington should have the opportunity to decide once and for all which name they prefer and the majority want Church Road.”
