Snow is expected to continue in Ashford and Folkestone for the rest of this morning and the afternoon before dying out this evening.

Commuters faced a treacherous trip into work with many roads covered in ice and snow. The A259 in Dymchurch (pictured right) was typical of the hazardous conditions faced by motorists.

The Faversham Road down to the town was frequently blocked with stranded cars many people simply abandoning them.

There are currently long delays and hazardous driving conditions along the M20 down towards Folkestone. Junction 11A on the M20 is currently closed because of the snow. The A20 is also extremely slow going with snow from Folkestone to the Limekiln Roundabout in Dover.

The A28 Canterbury Road is particularly treacherous with black ice causing many motorists to skid or become stuck when forced to stop. Willesborough Road is also slow going.

The snow caused one train in Folkestone to break down and several more to be abandoned.

Southeastern train spokesman Sarah Boundy said: "We have one failed train due to the conditions but services are continuing to run. However the services are subject to cancellation and we appreciate that a lot of people this morning have had difficult journeys."

Trains cancelled so far include the 8:37am London Victoria to Ashford International; 8:47am Ashford International to London Victoria; 8:53am London Charing Cross to Ashford International; 10:07am London Victoria to Ashford International; 10:37am London Victoria to Ashford International and 10:45am Dover Priory to London Victoria
