Retailers in Ashford’s Lower High Street say they are concerned about the effects the planned closure of the road will have on their businesses.

Shop owners and market traders were notified of the work – being carried out between Mecca Bingo Club and to the junction with Wellesley Road – just nine days before it was due to start.

Letters were sent out on behalf of Kent County Council informing retailers on Monday.

Some are concerned over the lack of consultation and sudden announcement, particularly market traders, who have been told they will have to move.

A suitable alternative venue for the market was still under discussion.

Market trader spokesman Pete Rosson said: “I have written to the leader of Ashford council before about the dangerous cobbles on the Lower High Street, so we are pleased that the work is being done.

“But KCC have been a bit naughty about this. It has been sprung on us very recently, and with the bank holiday weekend approaching, the timing is particularly bad.

“If we don’t have a plan by this weekend, there will be chaos by next weekend.”

Beginning on Wednesday, June 6, the work – to repoint granite cobbles in the road in time for the Olympic Torch procession – is expected to take up to five weeks.

KCC highways manager Toby Howe said: “We have been in close liaison with Ashford Borough Council to ensure these works can be carried out causing minimal disruption to Ashford.

“By closing the whole site in one go the works will be able to be completed in less time, and by working through June we will have longer working days.

“The works will commence once the Jubilee celebrations are over and will be substantially complete to enable the Armed Forces procession at the end of June.

“In addition, the works will be completed to enable traders, spectators and participants of the Olympic torch relay to enjoy the day.”
