A new exhibition displaying the town’s railway history has been officially opened by the Mayor.

Cllr Bob Davidson, accompanied by the Mayoress Daphne Davidson (pictured left), cut the ribbon at the extension to the Ashford Museum, located in the former Tourist Information Centre in the churchyard, Ashford.

It had been hoped that the new display would be open during last summer’s season, but work needed to be done to prepare the extra space needed for the exhibit.

Cllr Davidson said: “The transformation of this building is incredible. It’s important that the public come and find out about the history of our railway town.

“I think the priority for the museum is to promote itself to our local schools. It’s vital that the children learn and understand how the railway helped to make the town what it is today.”

Visitors to the attraction will be greeted by a replica ticket and booking office (pictured right), incorporating a working model railway donated by hobbie firm Hornby, whose headquarters are near Margate.

Interactive displays about the town’s railway history and information about modern services including high speed trains and Eurostar are also on show.

A number of photos, books and blueprints of the town’s railway heritage appear alongside hand tools and memorabilia from the Ashford works.

Admission to the museum is free, and doors are open Tuesday to Saturday, from 11am until 2pm from April until October
