Lamp post caught doing ‘360 degree turns’ in New Rents, Ashford

An unstable lamp post has been described as an accident waiting to happen.

Corrine Hussain spotted the lantern on the light fitting in Ashford swaying in the wind on Monday and said it was doing 360 degree turns.

Kent County Council (KCC) only replaced the fixture last month, but it has already been spotted wobbling precariously.

“It was doing 360 degrees like a child’s top toy,” Ms Hussain said.

“I was alarmed when I saw it, I guess there is a screw loose.

“I presumed the wind had made it loose. It is very tall.”

The lamp post is situated outside Ashford Sewing and Knitting Centre in New Rents.

Ms Hussain, who contacted the council about the post, added if the lamp were to fall, it would make a huge crash, due to the glass.

“It is an accident waiting to happen, that is what alarmed me,” she said.

A KCC spokesperson said: “KCC received a call on April 1 of a loose lantern, which was removed and refitted on April 6.

“While KCC has not received any further reports in this location since then, we will arrange for a crew to attend and investigate the fault.

“We would encourage members of the public to report issues directly to us through our fault reporting tool on our website so they can be promptly investigated.”
