PC hurt as suspected drink-driver flees

A KENT police officer was injured when a motorist stopped for suspected drink-driving drove away from the scene.

The motorist, driving a silver Ford Focus, had been stopped by police close to the village of Hamstreet, near Ashford.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "He was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol. The officer, a PC, was injured when the vehicle drove off at speed."

The policeman attended Ashford's William Harvey Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. He was later able to return to duty.

The Ford Focus was later found abandoned. A pit bull terrier which had been travelling in the car was found in the area and taken to Ashford Police Station where staff were taking care of it.

Police are searching for the driver who is described as white, aged about 30, with light brown hair. He was wearing a denim blue shirt and jeans.

The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ashford Police Station on 01233 619167.
