DETECTIVES have released a photograph of a 34-year-old man who died following a serious assault in the street.

Mark Sabine, who lived in New Street at Ashford, died from his injuries on Monday evening in hospital. The assault happened just after midnight on Sunday morning in the High Street at Ashford.

Kent Police would like to hear from witnesses who saw any disorder in the town centre before the assault, particularly if it involved a man wearing a red T shirt (pictured).

Acting Det Ch Supt Paul Fotheringham said: "This is now a murder inquiry. People may have important information that can help the investigation."

An incident room has been set up at Ashford Police Station. Anyone with information is asked to contact 01233 619061.

Mr Sabine was taken to Ashford's William Harvey Hospital immediately after the assault which occurred near the bandstand in the town centre. He had sustained severe head injuries.

He was later transferred to a neurosurgical unit at a hospital in Central London where he died.
