Ashford MP Damian Green has endorsed the give-away of 2 million energy-saving lightbulbs in a unique new initiative.

The UK-wide scheme, to help soften the blow of soaring energy costs, was locally launched at Mecca Bingo in Ashford High Street last Friday.

It is the first scheme of its kind for the bingo industry internationally and a joint venture with energy suppliers Southern Electric.

Mr Green said: “Changing to energy-saving bulbs can be a great way of saving money.

“This campaign is giving practical and timely help to householders, particularly those living in fuel poverty.”

Now Mecca members can collect a free pack of two energy-saving bulbs by swiping their membership card at their club.

The Ashford branch is phasing in these special bulbs, already having them in its staff areas and bringing them into public areas by Christmas.

Mr Green says that he is fitting them at his home as traditional bulbs are used up.

Paul Farrelly , acting manager for Mecca at Ashford, said: “We were pleased that Mr Green could support our campaign.

“It means we can reward our members and make a difference to their finances and in their efforts to go greener.”
