An elderly man has been killed in a road crash on Romney Marsh.

It is the second road tragedy in the Ashford and Shepway area in two days during icy conditions.

The 67-year-old died after his car was in collision with another on the A259 between Lydd and Brenzett.

It happened at around 10am on yesterday and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Nissan Micra the victim was driving, towards Lydd, was in collision with a blue Suzuki Vitara going towards Ashford.

Two other people in the Micra and the driver of the Suzuki suffered serious injuries but they were not thought to be life threatening.

Fire engines were called to the scene and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free casualties trapped in their vehicles.

The previous day, just after midnight, a 17-year-old youth died after his car left the road at Bilsington and landed on its roof in a ditch.

Both accidents have happened at a time of treacherous road conditions because of ice although the cause in each case is not confirmed. Police are still investigating.
