Ashford mum traumatised after washing machine explodes in her home

A mum says she is scared to do laundry ever again after her washing machine exploded, sending hundreds of glass shards across her house just metres from her young children.

Jade Jenns-Bishop, from Ashford, was hanging clothes on an airer outside when she heard a loud bang coming from her kitchen.

Peering through the window, she could hardly believe what she was seeing.

“I had just put another load of washing on when I heard what sounded like a bomb going off,” said Ms Jenns-Bishop, 31.

“I looked through the window and there was glass just firing everywhere, it was being shot out of the washing machine in all directions.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in my life."

The full-time mum has been left traumatised by the ordeal, which also left her autistic six-year-old daughter screaming in fear.

Miraculously, nobody was injured in the blast as Ms Jenns-Bishop and her young children were all in the garden when the accident happened last Tuesday.

“My one-year-old likes to watch the washing machine go around, he thinks it’s funny,” added the mum-of-four.

“But if he had been there at the time, he would have been killed - it went off like a nail bomb.

“If I had even gone inside to check what had happened after I heard the bang, I would have been cut to pieces.”

Unable to go anywhere near the machine to turn it off, Ms Jenns-Bishop had no choice but to wait for the spin cycle to finish.

Broken glass was sprayed all over her kitchen for about seven minutes, and more than a week later, the Ashford resident is still finding shards and splinters throughout the first floor of her house.

Luckily, nobody suffered injuries as a result of the accident.

Ms Jenns-Bishop says she has no idea what could have caused the explosion.

“I checked all of the pockets, and there was nothing with zippers in there - it was mostly baby clothes,” she added.

The machine had been bought new just two months ago, when the Jenns-Bishop family moved into the house.

Ms and Mr Jenns-Bishop had done much of the kitchen redecorating themselves, making the hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the flooring, cupboards and appliances even harder to bear.

“Everything was brand new, and everything has been ruined," she said.

“We put so much work into the kitchen ourselves as we were trying to save a bit of money, but now just look at the state of the floors.”

Even though the machine was covered, the insurance company has so far only agreed to send someone out to repair the door.

Ms Jenns-Bishop is determined to fight and get a replacement, but even then she worries she will be too afraid to do laundry ever again.

“I’m scared to use a washing machine for the rest of my days,” she added.
