A flood warning has been issued for a 16-mile stretch of river as water levels are set to rise.

The alert from the Environment Agency has been issued for businesses and residents along the River Stour from Conningbrook Manor in Ashford through to Canterbury and Sturry.

The authority is advising people to monitor water levels and to "start acting on your flood plan if you have one".

As well as this, people are being informed to avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding.

The warning is in place for villages along the river including Wye, Chilham and Chartham.

Extreme cold weather warnings has also prompted the Met Office to issue a warning for motorists facing icy conditions.

It comes as heavy rain hit much of the UK at the weekend followed by yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office this week.

The Met Office has also issued a flood alert from Charing Heath to the A2070 in Ashford and the Aylesford stream.

Residents in the River Teise area from Lamberhurst to Goudhurst, including the River Bewl and tributaries of the River Teise, were warned of flooding.

As of Saturday morning, there were 170 flood alerts issued across the UK.
