Fire at Swingfield village hall

Firemen were called to a blaze at a village hall on Saturday morning.

Two fire engines from Folkestone attended, along with a third from Aylesham, when the alarm was raised at 6.22am.

Firemen wearing breathing apparatus went into Swingfield village hall, near Folkestone, to make sure no-one was trapped inside, but soon established the building was empty.

There was concern however, as there were several calor gas cylinders inside, which firefighters feared might explode.

Firefighter Heather Heath said: "It was an intense fire when we arrived. An investigation is being carried out to establish the cause of the fire to find out whether it was accidental or deliberate."

Fire investigators and the police were at the scene for several hours after the fire was extinguished.
