Concerns are being expressed over the future of works of art when the £6 million redevelopment of Ashford's Church Road Library gets underway this year.

Campaigners are calling on residents to support their fight to prevent the loss of works that have been enjoyed for the past two decades.

They are concerned for the future of current art works when the library site is bulldozed and fear they could be lost.

Leading the fight is artist Vikky Furse, who said: “As yet no decisions have been made on the fate of the existing art which has been a feature for 20 years.

“Sadly an art gallery is no longer included in the new library design and Ashford must be one of the few towns in Europe without a dedicated space for art.

“It is important that existing artwork is either included in the new building, or re-located and new art work commissioned for the building.

“Everyone can visit the library and record their views on a comment card. It is important the county council knows Ashford cares about its culture.”

On the wall beside the main entrance is a large mosaic designed by Marion Brandis and Nicholas Martin with primary school pupils in 1990 is regarded as a snap-shot of local history.
