Organisers of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the North Downs Way on Saturday ignored the age-old advice to never work with children or animals.

They combined both by putting snails on children’s faces!

About 20 youngsters volunteered to have snails placed on their faces in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. The record stands at 25 and the greatest snail count on Saturday was 20.

Tony Gowers, North Downs Way national trail officer said: “We had so many youngsters who wanted to have a go that the snails wouldn’t settle.”

The Guinness World Record for cartwheeling was not broken either. One hundred and thirty children filled the lawnspace at Withersdale Hall in Wye and turned cartwheels, but the record remains unbroken at 478.
