Ashford police catch suspect in Queen Street after commandeering car near Stour Centre in Station Approach following theft and crash in Loudon Way

A mystery driver in a flowery car helped police catch a teen suspect when he drove officers after the boy who had ridden away from them on his bike.

Officers on patrol on foot near the Stour Centre on Sunday afternoon spotted the 17-year-old, who had allegedly taken a car without the owner's consent two days previously and crashed it into a wall in Loudon Way.

But the youngster was on a bike and managed to get away so the officers commandeered a passing car, with the co-operation of the driver, who drove them to Queen Street where they stopped and arrested the teen.

He was taken into custody at Folkestone police station and charged with aggravated vehicle taking on Friday, November 7.

He was also charged with driving while disqualified, using a motor vehicle without insurance and criminal damage caused by punching a bin lid.

He was remanded in custody and is due before Folkestone Youth Court on Tuesday, November 18.

Police are now appealing for the driver who helped them to get in touch so they can thank him properly.

Spokesman Jon Green said: "Unfortunately the officers didn’t get the chance to get his name or address. He was driving a yellow VW Beetle with flowers on it. We’d like to trace him so we can say thank you."
