Cigarettes start shed and decking fire in Langney Drive, Washford Farm, Ashford

Firefighters were called to Washford Farm, Ashford, after discarded cigarettes set fire to a wooden decking.

Two fire engines from Ashford fire station were called to a report of a shed alight at Langney Drive at 3.55am today.

Crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze, which had spread from a flower pot to the decking and a metal shed. They also had to cut out and remove a section of the wooden decking.

Temporary crew manager Dan Halligan said: "They had been smoking and discarded cigarettes in a wooden flower put and that had caught alight to the decking, fence and caused slight damage to the metal shed."

He reminded residents to be mindful of carelessly discarding smoking materials and to make sure they are properly extinguished.
