Tony Reynolds insists that as manager of newly-formed Ashford United Football Club he won’t be making the same mistakes that pushed the former club to extinction.

Reynolds and his management team are charged with the responsibility of building a team from scratch to compete in the new Kent Invicta League but he won’t be paying wages to do it.

Spending beyond their means was one of the reasons the old Ashford Town hit financial trouble.

Reynolds (pictured) said: "What we have to try and do is manage without paying any players because the club is building new foundations now.

"I grew up in Ashford and played for the club when I was 16 and I was proud to play for them, which is what I hope the new team will be like.

"We are bringing in local talent and that should create interest in Ashford itself. If you come and see Ashford next season, you will be watching Ashford players play and people will be able to relate to them."

Reynolds’ team is likely to be sprinkled with talent from surrounding areas build around a core of home-grown players.

"When I was in Ashford, I wanted to play for my local team and hopefully the same mentality is around," he said.

"I would certainly prefer to play for my hometown club than go for a kick about down the park and pay subs.

"I don’t want to get into the situation where we pay some players and not others."
